Derozen has gotten a little better each year, and can definitely fit in as a third scorer on a playoff team. Pinkham: They’re having a fire!!!!……sale. If things go according to plan, Toronto could be looking at a top-5 lottery pick in a loaded draft to go along with the space to add whatever big name would be willing to go to Toronto. The plan going forward should be to clear more cap for next summer while being as bad as possible. This team is not going anywhere even though the deal probably makes them better. Moving these guys should downgrade the roster, allowing for the Raptors to stop their flirtation with actually winning the shitlantic and officially enter the first pick sweepstakes (I am sorry, but there are just two many guys for one pun to justify this tank race).Ĭummings: If I’m Masai, I’m shopping Derozan and Lowry to any takers. Kyle Lowry certainly could get something in return, as could Demar DeRozen. I expect them to consider shopping their tradeable assets not named “Jonas”. What is the Raptors plan for the rest of the season?ĭeBear: There is already talk that this trade will actually make the Raptors better in the short term, which is counter-productive to their rebuild. I think the move was worth it to generate a little buzz for a dying franchise and see what you can get out of a Gay, Derrick Williams, Boogie Cousins line-up. Who knows, maybe Boogie will annoy him so much that he decides against taking that $19 million player option for next year. I have to imagine the Kings won’t re-up on Rudy once his contract is done. The Nuggets had a lot of success over the last few seasons despite not having a “star” on the roster, so I’m a little curious about bringing in an All-NBA Ballhog in Rudy Gay to pair with All-NBA Headcase in Boogie Cousins. They’re under new ownership a group who brought in highly regarded Pete D’Alessandro from Denver. Let’s not give them too much credit though.

They have Gay for this year and most likely next (would you turn down $19 mil to miss open jumpshots?), and with Boogie locked up maybe they are just rolling the dice and seeing if they can catch lightening in a bottle. Mike Malone could get creative here (with nothing to lose) and rejuvenate Rudy’s play. My guess is they are hoping Gay will understand this is Boogies team, and that he is the second scoring option. Rudy Gay is a notorious ball stopper, and bringing him could stunt the development of guys like Isiah Thomas. Or it could be both, I really don’t know. This could be a sneaky way of keeping a bad team bad, or a misguided effort to bring a “big” name into town. Gay has a ridiculous $19 million player option for next year which he will pick up unless he’s an idiot. I feel like this is one of those short-sighted moves that will get the moderate NBA fan in Sacramento to tune in to this year’s Kings. Rudy Gay has been brutal all season long and he is laughably overpaid. Pat Cummings (Chicago): To be honest, I’m not totally sure. And, as Zach Lowe pointed out, Sac-town will have $71 million in committed salary next year before giving anything to Isiah Thomas, one of the lone bright spots on a flailing roster. With the growing dissent of Rudy within the league, the odds of him opting out of his $19 million option appears slimmer and slimmer. There is also a strong chance he stunts the development of Boogie Cousins and new acquisition Derrick Williams. The nerds have hated this guy for years, and his shooting percentage is actually down to 38% (woof) after the well-publicized corrective eye surgery he had this summer. I mean, he’s got talent, but we all know the story on Gay. Newsflash: this guy shouldn’t be (and mostly isn’t) considered a high profile talent anymore. Which is exactly what the Raptors did less than a year ago when they acquired Gay. The new owner wants to make a “splash” by acquiring a high profile talent. Steve DeBear (New York): I really don’t know. First things first – what are the Kings doing?
